Custom Knitwear Order Guide: MOQ, Price, Samples, Lead Time and Payment

When developing a custom knitwear collection, many fashion brands and buyers want to know the same key questions before starting: What is the MOQ? How much does a sweater cost? Can we make samples first? How long does production take? What are the payment terms?

As a professional custom knitwear manufacturer, Tesin supports fashion brands with OEM and ODM knitwear development, including sweaters, cardigans, pullovers, knit dresses, vests, and other knitwear items. In this article, we will explain the main points you need to know before placing a custom knitwear order.

  1. What Is the MOQ for Custom Knitwear?

MOQ means Minimum Order Quantity. For custom knitwear, the MOQ may vary depending on the yarn, color, design, knitting technique, and order quantity.

In general, the MOQ for custom knitwear is usually based on:

Style

Color

Yarn composition

Gauge

Pattern complexity

Custom labels or packaging requirements

For simple styles, a lower quantity may be workable. For complicated designs, special yarns, or custom-dyed colors, the MOQ may be higher.

At Tesin, we try our best to support both small-batch customization and larger production orders. If you are not sure whether your quantity is workable, you can send us your design, target quantity, and material requirements. Our team will check the best solution for you.

  1. What Affects the Price of Custom Knitwear?

The price of a custom sweater or knitted garment is not based only on the style. Several factors will affect the final quotation.

The main cost factors include:

Yarn Composition

Different yarns have different costs. For example, cashmere, merino wool, wool, cotton, acrylic, viscose, and blended yarns all have different price levels. High-end yarns usually have a softer hand feel and better wearing experience, but the cost will also be higher.

Garment Weight

Knitwear cost is closely related to yarn consumption. A heavier sweater usually uses more yarn, so the price will be higher.

Gauge

Gauge refers to the fineness of the knitting. Different gauges create different textures and thicknesses. Coarse-gauge sweaters, fine-gauge knitwear, and lightweight knit tops may have different production costs.

Knitting Technique

Jacquard, intarsia, embroidery, printing, cable knit, crochet, and other special techniques may affect the price. More complicated techniques usually require more production time and higher technical support.

Order Quantity

Quantity also affects the unit price. Larger orders usually help reduce the average production cost, while small orders may have a higher unit price.

Labels and Packaging

Custom neck labels, care labels, hangtags, polybags, cartons, and other packing requirements may also affect the final cost.

To provide an accurate quotation, we usually need the customer’s reference image, tech pack, size chart, quantity, yarn requirement, color, and workmanship details.

  1. Can We Make a Sample Before Bulk Production?

Yes. Sample development is an important step before bulk production.

A sample helps the customer confirm the following details:

Style and shape

Measurements

Yarn quality

Hand feel

Color

Pattern placement

Workmanship

Labels and finishing details

At Tesin, the usual sample lead time is around 7–10 days after all details are confirmed. For more complicated designs or special yarns, the sample time may be longer.

After the sample is finished, we can take photos or videos for checking first. If needed, the physical sample can also be sent to the customer by express courier.

  1. What Is the Lead Time for Bulk Production?

Bulk production lead time usually depends on the order quantity, yarn availability, design complexity, production schedule, and approval process.

In general, bulk production normally takes around 30–60 days after sample approval and deposit received.

The full production process usually includes:

  1. Design and tech pack review
  2. Yarn and material selection
  3. Sample development
  4. Sample approval
  5. Bulk production
  6. In-line inspection
  7. Final inspection
  8. Packing and shipment

For urgent orders, customers can let us know the target delivery date in advance. Our team will check the production schedule and try our best to provide a workable solution.

  1. What Are the Usual Payment Terms?

For custom knitwear orders, the common payment term is usually:

30% deposit before production and 70% balance before shipment by T/T.

For sample orders, the sample fee is usually paid before sample development. The sample cost depends on the design, yarn, and technique.

For long-term cooperation or special projects, payment terms can be discussed based on the order situation.

  1. What Information Should Customers Provide for a Quotation?

To help us quote accurately and quickly, customers are encouraged to provide as much information as possible.

Useful information includes:

Product picture or design sketch

Tech pack

Size chart

Quantity

Color requirements

Yarn composition

Gauge requirement

Knitting technique

Label and packaging requirements

Target price

Target delivery date

If you only have a reference image, that is also fine. Our team can review it and provide suggestions on yarn, gauge, technique, and production feasibility.
